AAPAAN Chapter Updates
AAPAAN chapters around the country are a great way to reconnect with the University, get together with old friends, and meet new ones. Some notes on what our chapters have been up to:
New York
Building upon its success last year in hosting happy hours, networking socials, and a bowling night, AAPAAN NYC held two social events this summer that brought together U.Va. alums and friends for food and drink.
Summer barbecue: The first event was a barbecue hosted by triple ‘Hoo Tuyen Do (McIntire, Darden, & Law), and his wife on June 20. Although bad weather threatened to keep us away from the grill, we forged ahead anyway, cooking burgers and hot dogs under the protection of an umbrella and moving the rest of the festivities inside the Dos’ lovely Union Square home.
Welcome to the City: On August 5, the NYC chapter sponsored our first annual "Welcome to the City" event at Bleeker Street Bar in the East Village. The after-work happy hour was attended by more than a dozen alums and friends. Though the event concept was to welcome recent grads to New York, the group was composed mostly of New York veterans! In any event, as we all filtered out of the bar, lingering stragglers seemed enthusiastic about organizing another (perhaps even less formal) get-together in Chinatown, over hot bowls of pho. Stay tuned!

Welcome to the City: On August 6, 2009, about 20 UVA alum converged on Washington D.C.'s cool K St. Lounge (owned by fellow AAPAAN member David Chung) for the D.C. Chapter's first "Welcome to the City" event. A lively mix of new grads and seasoned alums chatted it up, welcoming many for whom the evening was their first AAPAAN event. Raffle prizes were doled out, including the top prize of Sunday Brunch at Tony and Joe's Seafood Place at the Washington Harbour in Geogetown going to Tina Chi, CLAS 2004. Due to a scheduling conflict, we shared the venue with a tie manufacturer's event, which made for a very colorful event. We were also treated to a special visit by Hernando Herrera, Chair of the Bolivar Network (U.Va Hispanic alumni group).
Dan Phan (CLAS '09), one of the new UVA grads in attendance, was glad to have the chance to meet other Asian American alums in the area. "I was excited to meet other UVA alumni and it was fun being able to just relax and meet some other alumni over drinks. Everyone was friendly and I enjoyed the open and welcoming atmosphere despite being relatively new. I also won a prize during the raffle!"
The D.C. Chapter will co-sponsor monthly happy hours at K St. Lounge with a number of other D.C. Asian Pacific American organizations. Please check the AAPAAN website for more information, and come and join us!
San Francisco
Welcome to the City: We welcomed new graduates to our August 9 “Welcome to the City” event in beautiful Golden Gate Park. We were pleasantly surprised by warm and sunny weather, which made the outdoor barbeque quite a success.
